WASHINGTON, D.C. – Stability AI’s Chief Executive Officer, Emad Mostaque, sent an open letter to the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law advocating for increased transparency and scrutiny in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Mostaque was one of the few industry CEOs who, on March 22, joined an open call for greater caution in the development of potent AI models. Subsequently, on May 4, the White House announced that Stability AI will be participating in a ground-breaking initiative to evaluate large AI models via community-led testing.

“We welcome this collaboration; public oversight begins with public scrutiny,” stated Mostaque in his letter to Chairman Richard Blumenthal and Ranking Member Josh Hawley.

The CEO further underscored the significant opportunity presented by AI in driving innovation, boosting productivity, and safeguarding national competitiveness. However, he also cautioned about the challenges posed by AI, emphasizing the necessity of a balanced response that fully realizes the potential of these technologies while addressing the emerging risks.

In contemplating the future of AI oversight, Stability AI urges the Subcommittee to vigorously promote openness in AI. Mostaque stressed, “These technologies will be the backbone of our digital economy, and it is essential that the public can scrutinize their development.”

He added that open models and open datasets would improve safety through transparency, foster competition, and ensure that the United States retains strategic leadership in crucial AI capabilities.

“Grassroots innovation is America’s greatest asset, and open models will put these tools in the hands of workers and firms across the economy,” Mostaque further wrote.

The CEO concluded the letter by offering Stability AI’s perspective on the principles underpinning their technology, the importance of open models, and suggested areas of inquiry as the Subcommittee ponders the future of oversight. Mostaque expressed willingness to discuss these matters in further detail.
